The new JRC headquarters in Sevilla will take place in the urban configuration on La Cartuja Island, shaped by the Expo92 and defined by a specific programmatic nature today – a Technology and Research Park in which culture, education, leisure, and commerce are combined with office buildings and research centres. In sharp contrast with the narrow streets in the adjacent historic city, the nature of the public space on the island is open and vast: big boulevards, wide open spaces, and large parks. While the small streets in Sevilla offer protection against the sun, the open space is fully exposed to the hot climate. The question becomes one of a specific urban condition and about how to integrate a new sustainable premise in this scattered neighbourhood that wants to be urban and vivid.
